The Evelyne was named after Evelyne Bertrand, who was the head of Hermes’ riding department. It was designed in 1978 to carry grooming equipment and was sold in stores alongside other equestrian goods. The perforated H was designed to enable air to enter the bag to dry the equipment. Originally, the bag was intended to be worn with the H facing the body.
Today, the Evelyne is regarded as a high fashion messenger bag. Its crossbody, hands-free and casual styling is on trend for everyday wear. The bag is now found in the leather goods area, along with Hermes other classic bags. The perforated H has become the Evelyne handbag’s signature detail and is intended to be worn outward.
The design of today’s Evelyne is very much the same as the original Evelyne introduced in the late 1970s. The few changes have made the current Evelyne (Evelyne III) more in tune with today’s lifestyle — expandable side gussets, a removable and adjustable long lightweight canvas shoulder/crossbody strap, and an easy-to-reach rear pocket.
